Trees for Kalimna Park, Castlemaine (Vic)

Huge thank you Peter from Thompson Funerals for your community service. Peter has been supporting Castlemaine landcare groups (through Fifteen Trees) for the past 3 years.

Kalimna Park is a 175 h.a. bushland reserve on the north eastern side of Castlemaine.   Largely cleared of native vegetation by gold digging in the 1850’s, and areas of gold mining up until the 1920’s, the park has been the focus of the Friends of Kalimna Park for some twenty years. Areas of revegetation and restoration, track maintenance and weed clearance have been undertaken, with the support of Parks Victoria who manage the site.

With the generous donation of 100 native plants (and tree guards) through Peter Thompson of Thompson Family Funerals, the Friends held a planting day in the north western section of the park. The one acre site already had established eucalyptus trees and a wonderful spring carpet of native wild flowers (chocolate lilies, yam daisies, orchids) but very sparse understorey. The 100 native trees planted, will encourage the area to become more self sustaining and entice wildlife back to the area.

This year, we planted Simon’s trees at Westgate Park in Port Melbourne with the team from Westgate Biodiversity, a not-for-profit organisation located at the base of one of Melbourne’s most iconic landmarks and busiest gateways to the city.
