Sonja Meyer is eco-cool!

TREES PLANTED

Sonja Meyer is a ‘socially RESPONSIBLE and environmentally conscious GRAPHIC and visual designer’ who also happens to love buying TREES to help keep her carbon footprint small.   SM-logo   To achieve her eco goals, Sonja includes these aspects into her work:
  • Improving quality of life for everyone, including the other 99%
  • Respect and care for the community
  • Conservation of Earth’s vitality and diversity
  • Minimising practices that deplete non-renewable resources
  • Changing personal attitudes about the impact of certain products and services through design.
Planting trees   This year, Fifteen Trees planted 60 trees on Sonja’s behalf. The trees went to her home city of Melbourne.

Sonja’s trees were planted at the West Gate Reserve (Fishermans Bend, Melbourne at the city end of the Westgate Freeway) by RMIT staff and students.   This reserve was founded by 19 year-old Naomie Sunner, a VCA photography student. Naomie discovered the Park in 1999 on a trek along the length of the Yarra River. She thought this neglected, abandoned park was nonetheless beautiful and had such potential! Her initial thought was to volunteer but there was no friends group. So, with a little help from mentors, she established and incorporated the Friends of Westgate Park and set to work.

Many years later, this beautiful park is flourishing with native trees, shrubs and grasses. Native wildlife has returned and the whole ecosystem at West Gate Reserve is becoming self sustaining park.   seedling   Many thanks Sonja for your continued support of our native environment. 2100 TREES PLANTED

According to Sustainability Victoria, the average Australian lifestyle produces 15,000kg of carbon per year. If that sounds like a lot, it is! Over its lifetime, a tree can collect and store 268kg. This means, we each need to plant 58 trees per year to bring our individual carbon production down to zero. A little tricky for most of us to do in our own backyards, and this is where ‘A Subscription for the Planet’ comes in. (Feature image from Mt Worth Landcare).

Individual actions really do matter! Individually we can really only make small differences to the world around us, but collectively our numbers add up. And if enough individuals are involved then forests can be grown!
