TREES PLANTED

135

Simon Hughes from Renovators Paradise is unique in that he specialises in the sale of reclaimed building materials. This company encourages recycling and up-cycling. The process encourages recycling and reduces land fill, but it also showcases skill sets from bygone eras in products that are not reproduced in todays construction industry. The treasures we salvage add character and style to both old or new homes.

Flowedale Landcare have planted Simon’s trees.

Simon also supports tree planting through Fifteen Trees. This year, we have planted 135 trees for Renovators Paradise at Flowerdale, 15 trees for every car Simon has in his fleet. We have been supporting Flowerdale and their tree planting projects for the past decade. Indeed, ever since the 2009 Black Saturday fires. They are such a wonderful hardworking community it is a pleasure to help out by purchasing trees on their behalf. The trees are sourced from local native plant nurseries and specie selection is entirely between the nursery and Landcare. Simon, your trees have gone to a great home.

Learning to live with Covid restrictions, Flowerdale Landcare continue our efforts caring for country and community. What a fantastic day planting day we had with 15 degrees and bright sunshine to lift spirits in a family atmosphere. A total of 300 trees were planted over the course of the day.

The planting that took place adjacent to King Parrot was on Crown Land and strengthens the work of Flowerdale Landcare to enrich the vegetation corridor after 4 years of blackberry control. Platypus are often observed in this stretch of the Creek and taller vegetation overhanging the water creates shade and attracts insect food sources enhancing the habitat for Macquarie Perch that breed here. This previously bare area has become a rich corridor for honeyeaters, rosellas and other birds, attracting insects and providing nectar sources for a wider range of bird species. It was a deceptively difficult planting as beneath a rich soil layer lurked a very rocky substrate.

Thank you Simon, your support over many years has been appreciated by so many.

Corporate social responsibility can take many forms but for us … tree planting hits a number of targets! Community groups benefit as they receive free trees for their projects. The environment benefits as trees mean habitat for the native insects, birds, reptiles and mammals. And companies benefit too. ‘Through CSR programs, companies can help society while promoting their own brands. Corporate social responsibility can boost morale and can help both employees and employers feel more connected with the world around them’ (www.investopedia.com).

2100 TREES PLANTED

According to Sustainability Victoria, the average Australian lifestyle produces 15,000kg of carbon per year. If that sounds like a lot, it is! Over its lifetime, a tree can collect and store 268kg. This means, we each need to plant 58 trees per year to bring our individual carbon production down to zero. A little tricky for most of us to do in our own backyards, and this is where ‘A Subscription for the Planet’ comes in. (Feature image from Mt Worth Landcare).

Individual actions really do matter! Individually we can really only make small differences to the world around us, but collectively our numbers add up. And if enough individuals are involved then forests can be grown!
