TREES PLANTED

Skretting Australia is an international company producing feed for the aquaculture industry. They pride themselves on their commitment to sustainability and as such contacted Fifteen Trees asking if we could help organise for them a tree planting day.  Jenna Bowyer (Sustainability and Communications Officer) wanted to plant 15 trees for every employee (64 x 15 = 960 trees). In stepped Tony Scherer from Frogmore Creek Landcare. Tony had a connection with the Jansz Parish Vineyard (25km north/east of Hobart) and with some help from Margie Jenkin (Executive Officer of Landcare Tasmania) and Pulchella Nursery, a site was selected and species chosen. And so, on a wild and windy Tasmanian day in September, a host of volunteers from Skretting, along with Tony and his wife Joyce, turned up to revegetate a section of the Jansz Parish Vineyard. The trees went along on a tributary of the Frogmore Creek providing a wildlife corridor. The area was fenced off from livestock and cleared of any introduced species. Tony said that the soil was perfect for the planting day (given the amount of rain in the previous week) and that the new tree guards (supplied by Skretting) worked a treat. Six hundred of the 960 trees were planted that day and they included a mixture of eucalyptus trees (peppermints, white gums and blue gums), Prickly Box shrubs and a variety of wattles. It is hoped that the local Pademelon Wallaby and friends will be enticed back into the area. Meanwhile, over in the north/west corner of the island, Peter Lawrence (President of the Wynyard Landcare Group) happily took charge of the other 360 trees.  He distributed them out to his Landcare members to plant across number of sites. One site was along the Inglis River, it was here that the Waratah-Wynyard Council previously cleared the invasive willows to allow for the revegetation of native trees. This place is very popular with locals and is ideal for canoeing and fishing. Peter was delighted to have extra trees to plant and with the long wet spring, conditions were ideal. skretting original_PMS(422-186) A huge thank you to James Rose and Skretting Australia for the contribution to the native environment of Tasmania. Your generous donation to enable 960 trees (with tree guards) to be planted was very happily received by members of Landcare Tasmania. I think a visit to the Jansz Parish Vineyard and Inglis River is in order this summer. Slainte – Colleen    [/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
