After a long wet winter and spring, planting season in the southern states of Australia is coming to a close for 2016. However, before we completely close shop for the summer, check out these trees.
One hundred and five trees were planted by attendees at a Sustainable Education Workshop held at Narmbool (Vic) and organised by Ballarat Science & Environmental Teachers Network. The trees were generously donated by Peter King and the team at King’s Cars Ballarat. We plant 15 trees for every new Mitsubishi and Citroen sold at the dealership. I was a participant on the day and happily joined in with the tree planting.
Narmbool is a magnificent pastoral property of 2,000 hectares located at Elaine, just 30 minutes from Ballarat and 90 minutes from Melbourne. Owned and operated by Sovereign Hill, Narmbool is a fascinating example of sustainable farming in a diverse and fragile ecosystem. They run educational programs for school students from Prep right through to VCE.

Each year, Fifteen Trees plants native trees for every new home built by the Wodonga team. A tangible and lasting contribution to the local environment.
Chris and Sharri Longmore from G.J. Gardner Homes Shepparton are generous supporters of local community groups, and their tree planting projects. To date, Chris, Sharri and their team purchased almost 3,000 native trees for the Goulburn Valley district.
According to Sustainability Victoria, the average Australian lifestyle produces 15,000kg of carbon per year. If that sounds like a lot, it is! Over its lifetime, a tree can collect and store 268kg. This means, we each need to plant 58 trees per year to bring our individual carbon production down to zero. A little tricky for most of us to do in our own backyards, and this is where ‘A Subscription for the Planet’ comes in.
