TREES PLANTED

Green Design Solutions design sustainable homes for homeowners that are comfortable, healthy and efficient.

Their designs embrace the climate and block so that customers can reduce their demand of heating and cooling required in the home. Janine Strachan and the team design new homes and renovation projects that are on grid and off grid.

Green Design Solutions focuses on creating:

  • Sustainable homes – to design solar passive homes that are responsive to climate and comfortable, to assist in reducing the occupants environmental footprint, and to reduce demands on non renewable energy and water.
  • Liveable homes – to design for aging in place and reduced mobility of occupants through liveable design principles.
  • Healthy homes – to design healthy homes for occupants through material selection and design principles.

We were delighted to hear from Janine when she wanted to reduce the carbon footprint of her flights for 2019. The calculation is a simple one.

Janine wanted to reduce her footprint for 40 hours of flights …  so 40 trees. The trees were planted on a property adjacent to the the very successful ongoing revegetation project in the new Woowookarung State Forest Victoria. Mr Bob Hartmann planted out the 40 trees, and being a long time member of local landcare networks, Bob ensured he planted only natives, only at the right time of the year and gave all the trees protection with tree guards (plastic sleeves and 3 hard-wood stakes). These trees have gone to a great home.

Corporate social responsibility can take many forms but for us … tree planting hits a number of targets! Community groups benefit as they receive free trees for their projects. The environment benefits as trees mean habitat for the native insects, birds, reptiles and mammals. And companies benefit too. ‘Through CSR programs, companies can help society while promoting their own brands. Corporate social responsibility can boost morale and can help both employees and employers feel more connected with the world around them’ (www.investopedia.com).

Thank you Janine for finding Fifteen Trees (no mean feat) and for purchasing trees for one of our community planting projects. If you too would like to reduce the carbon footprint of your flights, skip over to 15trees.com.au/flights and we’ll get some trees planted on your behalf.

2100 TREES PLANTED

According to Sustainability Victoria, the average Australian lifestyle produces 15,000kg of carbon per year. If that sounds like a lot, it is! Over its lifetime, a tree can collect and store 268kg. This means, we each need to plant 58 trees per year to bring our individual carbon production down to zero. A little tricky for most of us to do in our own backyards, and this is where ‘A Subscription for the Planet’ comes in. (Feature image from Mt Worth Landcare).

Individual actions really do matter! Individually we can really only make small differences to the world around us, but collectively our numbers add up. And if enough individuals are involved then forests can be grown!
