Easter

TREES PLANTED

A Green Easter (Tuesday March 26th 2013) How can we make the whole experience of Easter a little GREENer? Well, I’ve done some research and found some truly lovely chocolate for you to spend your money on. Of course I had to taste a few along the way (all in the name of research my darlin’s). I also checked out Shop Ethical and found some brands to truly avoid. Kraft, Mars, Hershey, Nestle and Lindt (oh no) – all have a big red cross  next to their names for a variety of reasons including; they may contain GE ingredients, they breach advertising codes and they do not adhere to fair trade rights. Try these green brands this year – Cocolo, Haighs, Sweet William, Whitakers, Chocolateir, Darrell Lea, Ferrero, Guylian, Ballantyne and Earnest Hillier. They all get the big green tick of approval from the Shop Ethical team. These guys have done all our homework for us – sussing out companies and brands. You can buy Shop Ethical as an app ($4.45) or as a small compact booklet ($8.95). It is a fabulous empowering green tool to help us make good consumer choices. Therein lies our collective power. Sticky fingers in the name of research. White keys – bad choice! And of course there is huge array of local chocolate makers that probably live not that far from you.  They can help you buy local, organic chocolate for your loved ones this Easter. One of my favourites (that I’ve only just discovered) is Loving Earth. They make a beautiful organic chocolates and promote heath, sustainability and fairness – exactly what you want from a chocolate company. Slainte – Colleen

According to Sustainability Victoria, the average Australian lifestyle produces 15,000kg of carbon per year. If that sounds like a lot, it is! Over its lifetime, a tree can collect and store 268kg. This means, we each need to plant 58 trees per year to bring our individual carbon production down to zero. A little tricky for most of us to do in our own backyards, and this is where ‘A Subscription for the Planet’ comes in. (Feature image from Mt Worth Landcare).

Individual actions really do matter! Individually we can really only make small differences to the world around us, but collectively our numbers add up. And if enough individuals are involved then forests can be grown!
