G.J. Gardner Homes Wodonga has been supporting our community tree planting projects since 2013, and in that time, we have planted 8,160 trees in the Wodonga District due to their generous support. Every year, Fifteen Trees plants 15 native trees for every new home built by the Wodonga team.
This year, Adam and Simone Gregor purchased another 675 native trees for their beautiful Wodonga region in northern Victoria. The original inhabitants and traditional owners of this land near Albury and Wodonga are the Wiradjuri, Waveroo and Dhudhuroa people.
John Gibbons and his team of volunteers at Upper Kiewa Landcare planted the trees at 5 sites near the West Kiewa River. All landholders at each site had registered interest in improving biodiversity on their properties and undertaking rehabilitation projects to improve the natural resources for native wildlife.
Some of the species of trees included, a variety of Acacias (Blackwood, Ovens Wattle, Silver Wattle, Lightwood) and Eucalyptus (Swamp Gum, Red Box, Bundy Box, Ribbon Gum and Red Gum). These plants will help to create wildlife corridors, and increase biodiversity values on five farms across the Kiewa Valley. For example, the planting at the Losh property was focused on increasing understory vegetation to increase habitat for small birds and the planting at Mount Beauty will continue to improve riparian habitat which along the Kiewa River which has been degraded due to invasion by weeds (e.g. willow, blackberry and box elder).
Many native parrots, Kookaburras, ducks, Wrens, Finches, Whip Birds, Magpies, Cockatoos. Platypus, Tortoises, Snakes, Lizards, Possums, Kangaroos, wombats and bandicoots call this part of Victoria home and these trees will help protect and re-establish their native habitats.
Thank you to GJ Gardner and Fifteen Trees for the 675 plants you provided to our Landcare members over the winter of 2024. These plants enabled Upper Kiewa Landcare Group and five private landholders in the Kiewa Catchment to rehabilitate seven areas of degraded land. These plantings will assist in improving biodiversity, riverbank stability, and wildlife corridors in our local area.
