Planted in

Creating impact.

On Tuesday 13th August employees from Sentient Impact collaborated with The Friends of Koroit Creek and together they planted 500 native trees, shrubs and grasses to create habitat in the landscape of the much-loved and culturally significant region of Kororoit Creek, Melbourne.

It’s such a joy when local landcare groups join with business to create unity in tree planting. Not only do they learn about nature together, but they learn about each other. A true community connection is formed.

Teaming up for habitat

Working side by side from the wonderful volunteers of The Friends of Kororoit Creek, the teams enjoyed outdoor activity, giving a different perspective to their Board Rooms, meetings and screen time.

The Friends of Kororoit Creek had a great day with the lovely volunteers from Sentient Impact planting and weeding at our beautiful Bug Rug site. We planted 400 wildflowers, grasses, shrubs and trees, with the remaining 100 plus many more being planted in the next couple of weeks.

This detailed planting is our attempt to try and replicate what once was here on a thriving country. At our sites, we plant not just a treescape but also include shrubs for little birds like Superb Fairy Wrens to hide and breed in, grasses and wildflowers for food and habitat for insects like native bees and butterflies. We are trying to take over as much mown grass and dead space as possible to improve the thin green corridor running along the creek in an area of much human development. Many of the plants we plant have very few remnant populations (eg native grasslands) and some of the animals they shelter are critically endangered. Victoria’s Grasslands are among the most threatened habitats in the world with approximately 1% remaining.

It is a huge job, and it helps us greatly having support from organisations like Fifteen Trees and Sentient Impact. Thank you!

The Friends of Kororoit Creek have planted over 71,000 plants on the creek bed over the past six years, which is an incredible number. Their mission is to ‘undertake activities that protect and enhance the environment and habitat corridor along the Kororoit Creek’. And they seek to involve, inspire, and empower our local community. We are sure they did exactly that on their planting day.
