Sometimes there are really simple things everyone can do to reduce their carbon footprint. When staying at a hotel, choosing to skip the room cleaning and having a tree planted instead, is one of those things. Less cleaning means less emissions, and by planting a tree we increase the planet’s capacity to deal with climate change. We guarantee that trees donated by Australian hotels are planted in Australia, and we are very excited to now work with Fifteen Trees to ensure a true local impact for our partner hotels in Tasmania.

Tasmanian Tree Summary

In in the heart of Tasmania/Lutruwita, (Tyerrernotepanner Country), the Tasmanian Midlands is a landscape known for its temperate native grasslands and grassy woodlands, which are among the rarest ecosystems in Australia. For thousands of years, palawa/pakana people cared for this country through seasonal movement and cultural burning. European settlement from the early 1800s cleared much of it for grazing. Today, a new generation of custodians including farmers, conservationists, students and volunteers are working to bring it back, with the belief that productive agriculture and thriving biodiversity are not in competition.

Twenty-eight people turned up for the planting day, drawn from a diverse cross-section of the community; including 3 members from Hotels for Trees (Hobart),  students from the Big Picture School, volunteers from Nipaluna Nursery, the Tasmanian Land Conservancy, Landcare Tasmania and the landholders themselves.

The species chosen reflect the full ecological range of the Midlands and included eucalypts, wattles, Dolly Bush, Hop Bush, Black Peppermint, Cabbage Gum, Hakea, Tea Tree and Bottlebrush. All species were all selected to rebuild the layered structure of a landscape naturally characterised by Kangaroo Grass, Wallaby Grass and grassy woodlands of White Gum, Black Gum and Black Peppermint.

The unique Tassie wildlife here makes every tree worth planting. Bennett’s wallabies and Tasmanian pademelons move through the property. Wombats, Eastern Quolls and echidnas are regular visitors. The Tasmanian Devil, is found here too. Superb Fairy-wrens, Grey Fantails, Yellow-rumped Thornbills and Grey Shrike-thrushes all depend on the woodland habitat these plantings will help restore.

Tree planting is about far more than restoring the landscape, it’s about bringing people together to care for the places we all value.
