Rae Jeffers from the Yelta Landcare Group Inc in Mildura has worked diligently again this year to organise the planting of 480 trees on the behalf of Di and Brad Stanbrook of G.J. Gardner Mildura.
The trees went across 4 sites in the district: 2 schools, at a park under a bridge and a roadside reserve.
At Red Cliff’s Secondary College, 75 trees were planted on the school grounds. The students and teachers spent a morning planting and watering in the trees. They have made a commitment to keep water up to the trees for the coming summer season and hope to be sitting under their shade in years to come.

Eighty trees were planted at The Lake Primary School. Again, the school community planted the trees on the school grounds. Rae writes “It was a great afternoon last Friday at the Lake School. In perfect weather, Grades 5 and 6, with their Prep buddies, planted the 80 trees with assistance of two representatives from G J Gardner, the Principal, School Council President, 3 Yelta Landcare Group members and some staff. We have put in a dripper system to help water the trees over the summer months”.

At Abbottsford Bridge, Lauren Carr and her class from TAFE planted out 225 trees. They planted over a number of days and spent a great deal of time inspecting the site and ensuring the tree species selected would be suited to the soil type.

And finally, along Normans Rd, 100 trees were planted by a host of Landcare volunteers. Again a drip system was installed to help out the trees over the summer months.

WPA acknowledges that when it comes to environmental initiatives, its people are its strength. It has recently partnered with us to plant 15 trees for each hard-working staff member identified as a Sustainability Warrior.
