Barnes & Sons help plant 200 trees.

TREES PLANTED

Simon Mulqueen from F. W. Barnes & Sons (Ballarat) has once again generously supported our tree planting efforts. This year, on National Tree Day (July 24th) 200 trees were planted by staff and students at Damascus College along the Murnong Trail. This trail is an educative self-guided walk that will highlight the significance the area holds for the local Wathaurong people, as well as protect the trails name sake, the Murnong, or Yam daisy. This threatened species was once wide spread across Victoria and was a staple in the diet of the local Indigenous people, but is now threatened. Murnong was discovered on the College’s grounds and is now being protected. Justin Brennan (teacher at Damascus) writes … “Damascus College had for many years participated in National Tree Day on numerous sites around Ballarat. With the advent of the Murnong Trail project and the support of Simon Mulqueen, this year was the first time we had the opportunity to plant trees in our own backyard. It was fantastic to see students engaged with their local surrounds. It as given them a sense of pride and purpose knowing that they are contributing to the future of an important ecological and educative resource”. Thank you Simon for your continued support of our local efforts to revegetate important ecological sites in the Ballarat district.
